100 Happy Days: Remembering What Makes Me Smile

I've been seeing #100HappyDays making it’s way around my Facebook feed recently.  First, let me say…. hashtags. No. But, this one had me intrigued, so I googled.

I instantly fell in love with what I found.

First, I checked out the official 100 Happy Days website and then I read this article from Today.com.

Basically, the story is that the originator of the project was struggling with sadness despite having a great life. Needing to do something to change his perspective and the way he felt, he decided take a photo of something that made him happy each day for 100 days and post them on social media. Pretty soon he found that he no longer needed to look for things to be happy about because they were everywhere.  Now thousands of people are joining in and following his example.

It reminded me of one of my favorite memories from early marriage.  I had just started my first post-college, big girl job and had my first desk. My husband gave me one of those tear-off daily calendars that listed 5 things to be happy about every day. Every workday morning I would tear off the old day and then email my husband my favorites of the new day.  Sometimes I would add a few of my own.

One day in that morning email I mentioned some critters I find particularly charming.  He immediately wrote back, “Squirrels? Really?”  What can I say? It doesn’t take a lot to make me grin.

Real talk here.  When I read the first half of the 100 Happy Days story, I saw myself.  I have a great life… a wonderful marriage, a nice home, a career I enjoy and no real problems. But, for the past few months I have been struggling emotionally. I just don’t feel like myself. I don’t have the energy to do much of anything, which, as an extrovert, is making the problem worse. I’m in a serious funk and I need to turn it around. I want to get back to a place where squirrels make me giddy.

I’m hoping that if I can see myself in the first half of the story, I can also find myself in the second.  And, if not, at least it’ll be fun.

I’ll be posting my pics here once a week and I’d love you see yours too.  If you are participating in 100 Happy Days, use the comments below to post a link so we can all see what makes you smile. I won't even laugh at your hashtags.

And, of course, my pic for today, Day #1 is up there.  ‘Cause you can’t go wrong with squirrels.
